The Ultimate SUP Camping Accessory!
Imagine, you’re setting off for a two-day one night SUP adventure.
You have a long, hard first day of paddling. Perhaps a head wind thrown in there for fun.
You finally arrive at camp and all you can think of is FOOD to fuel your tired body.
You open your bag and have the unpleasant reminder that you could only fit dehydrated meals in your dry bag on your SUP. Oh what you’d do right now for a burger!!!!
Now let’s imagine an alternative scenario…
As you battle through the headwinds and reach camp, you smile knowing that tonight is BURGER NIGHT.
You have a STOV flat-packable BBQ in your dry bag, you can assemble it in 60 seconds and be consuming your delicious fresh burger in less than 10 minutes.
Sounds heavenly right?
So this blog isn’t sponsored… but it does feature a product that I feel very passionately about, not just because it’s so great for SUP adventures, but because it was invented by my dear boyfriend Freddy! (pictured below)
Freddy provided members of the She SUPs Community Hub a free sausage sizzle at the end of their members meet-up paddle last weekend to showcase what the STOV flat-packable BBQ is about, and how it can make the perfect partner to our paddles.
As he continues on his journey of promoting this newly launched product (it only came on the market in August), I thought I’d get him on the She SUPs blog to tell us a little bit more about why this product is just so damn good for paddling, and may be seen by many to be ‘THE ULTIMATE’ SUP camping accessory!
Anyway… let’s get started. Freddy can you please introduce yourself?
"Hi everyone, I’m Freddy. I live in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, and I work full time as a designer… but now have a rather large side hustle that occupies any other spare time I have”
>> We should also mention Freddy is a keen paddler too. In fact, he mostly uses his SUP for fly fishing as shown below…
So tell us, what is the STOV BBQ?
“The STOV BBQ is a gas-powered, flat-packable BBQ. It is made out of stainless steel sheets that you slot together (just like an IKEA flatpack but without the missing screws and confusing instructions) and within 60 seconds you have a micro BBQ standing in front of you ready for grilling. When it’s in its flat-pack state (i.e. the stainless steel sheets in the protective bag), it fits perfectly into a standard sized backpack (or dry bag) and only weighs 3.6kg.”
Where did the idea for STOV come from?
“The STOV BBQ idea was born during the COVID lockdowns and based on the challenge that there is nothing like a real portable BBQ. The small camping stoves are great for boiling water, while the backyard BBQs don’t have the portability. We wanted something in the middle, that is portable but does not compromise on cooking performance. So the STOV BBQ was born.”
Why is the STOV BBQ different from any other BBQ?
“There is nothing like the STOV BBQ in Australia. Its size when packed together of only 47cm x 29cm x 4cm (length x width x height/thickness) makes it the ideal BBQ to take on day trips, pack it in your backpack or just leave it in the car for a spontaneous cook up. The feeling of cooking at a beautiful place and having great food is hard to beat.”
How does it work?
“The STOV BBQ comes in an ultra rugged heat proof bag. The BBQ itself is made out of seven stainless steel plates that slot together. Setting it up is easy without any tools needed and can be done in under 60 seconds. The BBQ runs on gas (propane/buthan mix) via your usual camping gas cartridges that can be found in most outdoor shops. Once assembled, the gas is connected and lit, the BBQ only takes a few minutes to heat up and is ready for your BBQing.”
Have you taken it on any cool SUP adventures yet?
“The most memorable SUP adventure with the STOV BBQ so far probably was a 1 day adventure with my friends up at Pittwater in Sydney. We crossed the bay to fish along the western shore and stopped for lunch and later for dinner on some of the little beaches. Having the STOV BBQ there was amazing, as we had proper food that we could cook and enjoy. Having the BBQ in its bag on the SUP is so easy as well and I would always take it now. Even for a shorter day trip.”
Where would you dream STOV + SUP destination be?
“I would love to do a SUP expedition in the fjords of NZ and take the STOV BBQ there. The fjords look amazing and like the perfect place to explore via SUP while the STOV BBQ helps to cook amazing dinners after long days of paddling.”
This all sounds bloody fantastic, and I’m so excited that I will be owning at least 2-3 of these STOV BBQs to take on She SUPs paddles and trips!!
